Bread and Circuses

Come one, come all,

Wolves in sheep’s clothing,

Calling you the masses,

To your impending slaughter,

Sons and Daughters, Fathers and Mothers, Sisters and Brothers,

The invisible chains around your necks,

Shackled feet and handcuffed hands,

Minds imprisoned by the illusion of choice,

A well sought out, discovered, manipulated and majestically presented,

Series of lies that leads you, like fools gold,

To a lifetime of servitude,

With little nuggets of comfort thrown in,

To keep you in your place,

Smoke and mirrors,

Sold to you by very real devils,

In human form,

Those who have traded their independence,

For earthly gain,

At your expense,

Your expense,

Nay you say,

Well naysayers,

Observe the traditions that have led you astray since time immemorial,

Open your eyes,

Open your soul,

Open your minds,

And devour with every question in your soul,

The realities that you view as freedoms,

But are in fact the strings of the puppets and their masters,

Throwing everything at you,

Miracles of mass distraction, and,

Whether you admit it or not,

You have been victims of a system that curses you,

Systems that treat you like insolent little fools,

Children that need to discipline,

A mental anguish and spiritual genocide,

That right before your eyes,

Hides in plain sight,

If only you could see.

Like Shirley Bassey,
I wonder where should I begin,

About a tale much older,

Than you or I,

Caught in the crosshairs of a vicious,

And pervasive, destructive lie,

One that strikes deep within our deepest fears,

One that creates the myth that there is more than here,

But only if you abide by silly and arbitrary rules,

Such that to spite your nose,

You cut it off your face you dunces,,

I too once did the same,

Until I found out the meaning of my name.

Protector of mankind,

A chosen light,

Brought to deliver us,

From the evils of eternal night,

Illuminating what is so plain to see,

And yet,

So many refuse to rise and let it be,

But no more.

No more,

Can we, you and I sit,

Sit idly by?

Victims of a degradation,

So pervasive,

So all encompassing,

That from birth,

We are chasing our proverbial tales and tails,

Wishing and praying,

That for our children,

It will be of no avail,

And yet here we stand, on the precipice of something so divine,

The future is ours,

Right here,

Right now,

Yours and mine…

If you want it.

But first,

Let me prey upon thine ears,

The many crimes perpetrated against you,

Unleashing wanton fears,

For it started,

As many a fairy tale,

In land, far, far away,

And once upon a time.

panem et circenses,

panem et circenses.

“iam pridem, ex quo suffragia nulli / uendimus, effudit curas; nam qui dabat olim / imperium, fasces, legiones, omnia, nunc se / continet atque duas tantum res anxius optat, / panem et circenses. […]

(Juvenal, Satire 10.77–81)

… Already long ago, from when we sold our vote to no man, the People have abdicated our duties; for the People who once upon a time handed out military command, high civil office, legions — everything, now restrains itself and anxiously hopes for just two things: bread and circuses”

As so many of you are,

Stupefied idiots,

Caught in the glare of a box,

Replacing the nonsense of collective and communal distraction,

Sitting in darkened rooms,

In front of a TV,

Or on the internet,

concerned with nothing more than blatant self interest,

One moment at a time,

With furry kittens

And two girls one cup,

Refusing to see the obvious truths,

Self evident,

And yet,

Some are more equal than others,

At your behest,

For what the village idiot allows,

The system perpetuates,

One distraction at a time,

From your pocket,

While further alienating from you,

The rights bestowed by nature,

Not by man’s imaginary systems,

Religion, national boundaries and economic thievery algorithms,

Surely proving,

You were born idiotic,

And can never, so long as you remain duped,

Become citizens.

Willing and compliant idiots,

Complacent and pliant,

Like cultural play dough,

Complaining about the many fears,

Presented to you on an organic platter,

Of news cycles, in all medium,

Where the message,

So expertly crafted,

That your psychological acquiescence is guaranteed,

By test audiences and test groups,

Tool, retool, draft, redraft,

Idiot robots refusing to become unplugged,

Instead becoming unglued,

From the only things that matter at all,

Family, friends, community and the wider collective,

The boat we are all in,

That so few are willing to rock,

Instead you roll,

With the punches,

Any temporary advance in the dialectic of enlightenment,

Blotted out from your mind and soul,

Despite empirical and deductive truths at your fingertips,

The record dear idiots is clear,

Passive and collective acceptance of what so clearly is a lie,

  1. How many times,

Must a high minded citizen,

In overt rebellion to the established status quo,

Seek to inform you,

Before you finally see,

The laundry list of historic import,

Ready, willing and able to be understood,

Warnings by cherished literary giants,

Warning of the impending doom,

Of the wider idiot class,

Turned into passive slaves,

When the fight needs to be taken to our proverbial Emperors,

Politicians, Kings, Queens, Prime Ministers and Presidents,

Chairman, Chief Executives, Chief Financial Officers,

The fortune 500 instead should read the unfortunate seven billion,

Huxley, Orwell, Postman, Zinn, Chomsly and more,

Advising, revising, yelling from the mountain tops,

That you have settled for being handed a fish,

Rather than learning how to fish,

So far removed from the natural laws,

That for millennia kept us together,

That now, through man made manipulation,

Is tearing us apart,

At the brink,

Of our own mass extinction,

By people that despise you,

Are repulsed by and hold you in contempt,

For they know your idiocy,

And use it,

As a weapon,

More powerful than any bomb.

Since our so called modern civilization rose,

Our leaders,

Social, religious, political and economic,

Have used bread and circuses to distract us,

You and I,

The people they pledge their loyalty and love to,

From the very real things going on around us,

Whether with Gladiator deaths,

Animal cruelty,

Free bread or beer,

They have pressed into the base elements of your psyche,

Using them against you,

With the illusion of choice,

Coke or Pepsi,
Apple or Microsoft,

Television or Internet,

Nike or Adidas,

Leave it To Beaver, Friends, Seinfeld and the Simpsons,

Casablanca, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Avatar,

To cover up the very real flags on the play;

Are you enjoying your popcorn,

“Why of course the people don’t want war … But after all it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship … Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.”

Hermann Goering, Nazi leader.

Bread and Circuses,

Popcorn with Butter,

Pop Tarts,

And Supersize fries,

Through vigilant influence,

A lie repeated often enough,

Constant and every changing,

You have been bought and paid for by corporations,

Who control our supposed freedoms whenever and wherever their interests are at stake,

The men and women you vote for,

With minor exception are puppets,

With invisible strings,

Serving masters they don’t even know,

But you,

You sit there,

And perpetuate a system,

Which have used you as a robot,

Canon fodder,

They have robbed you, controlled you,

So that you will do nothing,

As slowly but surely,

Every right you think you have,

Is taken from you,

Right in front of you face stuffing eyes.

Do I sound angry,

Perhaps it’s because I am,

Sickened by what so plainly is happening,

Demons and boogie men created,

That at best are exaggerations and worst outright lies,

You must wake up from this nightmare,

Reclaim democracy,

Reclaim your freedom,

Reclaim your individuality,

Rather than this collective mass psychosis,

That keeps you in place…

It is not just I,

Who serves these dire warning,

You don’t need to believe me,

Just open your eyes;

That Individuals of them may… actually had a seperation [sic] of the People from their Government in view, is too evident to be questioned.” – George Washington

“I sincerely believe, with you, that banking establishments are more dangerous than standing armies.” —Thomas Jefferson

a financial element in the large centers has owned the government ever since the days of Andrew Jackson.” FDR

[W]e have come to be one of the worst ruled, one of the most completely controlled and dominated, governments in the civilized worldno longer a government by free opinion, no longer a government by conviction and the vote of the majority, but a government by the opinion and the duress of small groups of dominant men.” – Woodrow Wilson

“Mr. Chairman, we have in this country one of the most corrupt institutions the world has ever known. I refer to the Federal Reserve Board and the Federal Reserve Banks. The Federal Reserve Board, a Government board, has cheated the Government of the United States and the people of the United States out of enough money to pay the national debt…Mr. Chairman, when the Federal Reserve act was passed, the people of the United States did not perceive that a world system was being set up here… and that this country was to supply financial power to an international superstate — a superstate controlled by international bankers and international industrialists acting together to enslave the world for their own pleasure.” – Congressman Louis T. McFadden

“The individual is handicapped by coming face-to-face with a conspiracy so monstrous he cannot believe it exists. The American mind simply has not come to a realization of the evil which has been introduced into our midst. It rejects even the assumption that human creatures could espouse a philosophy which must ultimately destroy all that is good and decent.”  —J. Edgar Hoover

For we are opposed around the world by a monolithic and ruthless conspiracy that relies primarily on covert means for expanding its sphere of influence–on infiltration instead of invasion, on subversion instead of elections, on intimidation instead of free choice, on guerrillas by night instead of armies by day. It is a system which has conscripted vast human and material resources into the building of a tightly knit, highly efficient machine that combines military, diplomatic, intelligence, economic, scientific and political operations. Its preparations are concealed, not published. Its mistakes are buried, not headlined. Its dissenters are silenced, not praised. No expenditure is questioned, no rumor is printed, no secret is revealed.” — John F Kennedy

President as Puppet,

A man, women or group thereof,

Motivated solely by self interest AT YOUR EXPENSE…

Bread and Circuses my friends,

The revolution will not be televised,

For it is happening right now,

And shackled though you may be,

Hope herein lies,

Turn off the TV,

Unplug from Facebook,

Stop cooperating in your own destruction,

Or one day it will surely be too late…

Gotta go… there is BREAKING NEWS…

I scoff and jest,

But my idea,

This idea,

The time has come,

To rise up,

Demand better,

Be better,

And stop the senseless lies, destruction and slaughter,

Of our brothers and sisters around the globe,

Consume less,

Want less,

For Spaceship Earth,

Will correct herself,

And only a privileged few will be here to see it,

Unless you act…

R O A R – Sia Didn’t Stay

“I was not the lion, but it fell to me to give the lion’s roar.”

Winston Churchill

It fell to me,

As you ran,

From yourself,

From who you want to be,

It fell,

To me… Yet…

Too timid,

Too confused,

Too immersed in misunderstood cultural actualities,

Too fooled by an naughty smile,

Filled with insecurity

(still evident and handcuffing)

I know it’s hard to believe,

For years of my life,

I fooled you all,

Submissive to designs,

Of those who did not have my best interests in mind,

Avarice and deadly sins like fallen skeletons,

Wounding me,

Those that learned love was my Achilles heel,

Is my Achilles heel,

And like Sisyphus I feel

This weakness is rock but also

My amour, armor pierced,

Genuine to myself,

Nosce Te Ipsum,

Who and what I am,

Yet still

Left reeling,

My everything,

Wandering our proverbial jungle,

Concrete, wilderness and my mistaken impressions,

In efforts to understand,

Who am I?

What am I?

I and I and I left standing again,

Holding an empty bag,

Where once my love was known,

An unborn child lighting my way,

My Sia,

To the life I wanted,

The life I need,

And in an instant gone,

Torn from my happiness,

And I fell.

More like alley cat than lion,

Battered and bruised after one too many brawls,

Until my life changed, destined,

First a nervous break down,

My purr not yet a growl,

Wounds licked,

My tongue satiating a troubled mind,

As with loves ripe cancellation,

My growls not yet roar,

Though the seed was thrown,

Poor Sia…

Tossed aside,

As readily as a half eaten plate of food,

Worse still,

You must reap what you sow,

Therefore I had to submit to pain,

My Black Dog screaming…

Priority one,

Revive this beautiful soul,

Radiant spirit,

Release myself,

Held captive by endless lies,

Heart wrenching,

After months of sublime bliss.

Admitting defeat,

Of my spiritual energy,

My mental plague,

Excelling beyond the blind leading the blind,

My eyes opened by continual struggle,

Between perceptions of good and evil,

Love and hate,

Right and wrong,

I dare you to deception again,

Forewarning you,

That while I have been,

Fooled since birth,

Fooled by you,

Shame on me for believing,

Told of only two polarities,

Black and white,

Account for all,

Rather than the truth,

Shades of grey,

Cultural difference

And outsiders interference,

Inference, conjecture and aspersions,

I and I and I,

Gaining strength,

Gaining insight,

I and I and I,

Gathering the will to journey on,

Allowing my face to become a beacon,

A signal to the world,

To you,

My mane is growing again,

My growl becoming roar,

Here I come,

One word,

One sentence,

One stanza at a time,

(Though even the Lion needs pride)

Platitudes left behind,

As you thought I’d stay in this repressive mental state,

Following the trail of deceit,

Taking the bait,

Self induced, professed and confessed,

Caught inside the scope of a trophy hunters rifle,

Yet the hunter visionless,

Saw only the immediate in front of them,

No foresight.

Now firmly entrenched in my literary persona,

Warrior Poet,

King of,

Not just the proverbial jungle,

But also the one,

That leads me to you,

Whoever you are,

For now,

Poets united,

Wrestling with the intangible,

With love, fate, hurt and the Ether,

Over optic cables,

In the distance,

I hear you all,

And beseech you,

To do the same…

Rise from the shackles of experience,

Be more,

Slough off mistakes,

With wisdom gleaned,

Know that tomorrow is another day,

Stand proud,

Shattered yet intact and recognize,

These words are salvation,

While cold comfort to the romantic ideals we strive,

These words,

Like a lion’s roar,

Keep us alive…

Benign Neglect

Benign neglect,
In that we do not see,
Can not see?
Refuse to see?
Bearing false witness,
In gilded churches, synagogues and mosques,
Ivory towers where the powerful feast,
People wasting away on the street,
Right in front of them,
Right in front of us;

Cold and tired,

Hungry and wet,

Dying of starvation, a lack of shelter,

A societal lack of support,

It’s more than that,
Much more;

Girdles of steel and brick,
Built by the cheapest bidder,
Creating a mental prison,
From which so few can escape.

An economy built on conviction,
Of the underclass that is,
A brave young poet once proclaimed,
Growing up,
In a ‘jail cell economy,’
Motivated by profit.

Rat infested and asbestos laden,
As true in New York or London as it is in Vientiane or Vienna,
Blackboards and whiteboards from a different era,
Lessons that are no longer relevant,
Teachers that no longer teach,
Instead guiding the way through some standardized test.

Its hard to care when you’re conditioned to believe that no one else does,
Purple, blue, red, yellow, black and white,
Puddles filled with caps of each,
Representing our fallen youth,
Cocaine, Heroin, Meth and more,

Presented as truth,
An arrogant matter of factness,
Sold by Brian Williams or Tom Brokaw,
The news no longer all that fits to print,
Become all that’s fit to instill fear,
Pushing forward sn agenda,
That you nor I never get to vote on,

From our comfortable storied walls of power brokers,
Recreation centers,
Parks and the corners,
The breeding ground for both good and bad,
Morality decided by shades of gray,
No black or white,
We complain,
While sipping a chardonnay, or a Starbuck’s or a coke,
Yet most of us don’t even vote,
And when we do,
Who are we really electing?

Do you know the faces behind the suit,
Have you ever stopped to ask?
The illusion of choice is not a choice,
But shackles from which we cannot escape,
Who are their masters? Who are yours?
Where do they get their information,
Not to mention the very words that come out of their mouths?

And yet…
Look at the power you give them and look at what they’ve done,
What have they done?

Do none of you see?
Do none of you have the same fears?
Osama was not THE ‘terror,’
Merely one face of it,
A coward that hid behind faulty logic and misrepresented theology,
Once bought and paid for by the very people that label him,
Driven by hate;

But make no mistake, there are a million more driven by hate and fear.

National populations suffer from starvation –
When is the last time you didn’t finish a meal?

Drought, a lack of access to education,
Technology and science, my education undervalued,
My technology underused ,
As the Advil I take for a hangover could serve a much better purpose.

Prejudice, ignorance and fear,
Blinding society to the clear reality of life on earth today,
Blinding me,
Blinding you.

Milosevic (like so many before him)
Killed without prejudice any that got in his way –
Racial cleansing,
It sound so institutional doesn’t it?
So scientific, lets call it what it is, not make it easy to say –
Genocide (though we promised never again, look around today)

Damn political correctness –
Lets call a spade a spade,
Those mass graves and the videos we’ve seen,
Represent the decision of a sick man,
For the wholesale slaughtering,
Murdering and destruction of Muslims
In his very own modern Oprichnina.

Though, no less guilty are we,
Who sleep comfortably in our beds,
While drones strike far off lands,
Extraordinary rendition takes place,
In the murky grays we never see,
The boogie man is real,
You just never see him,
All in the name of freedom and peace?

Through time, the poet, the artist, the dreamer,
The playwright, actor, director, novelist, philosopher, student,

Any truly inspired by passion have dreamed of a better place –

And maybe,
Just maybe,
We’ve seen bits and pieces,
But there is so much more to go…

What can you do?

What will you do?

What will,

Nothing More

In spite of the challenges,

Both real and imagined;

Bipolar realities of immense consequences,

The hope  is temporarily muddled,
Somehow, the Ether allows me the trespass,
Of these words,
Those become my mental temptress,
Outwardly manifested for you,
While inwardly struggling,
Some of sorrow,
Others of joy,
Some of delight,
While others still of pain,
Nothing more nor less,
This truth presented,
Without pretense,
At the very least none intended,
For you to see,
Can you feel this subjugation I encounter daily?

Worshipping at the syllables that make these words;

Bowing down to the thoughts,
Those force my sublimation,
Still finding the will to fight,
To carry on,
To continue this journey of greatness intended;

In spite,

Of those challenges;

For I know no other way,
I know no other means,
Fighting for my survival,
Hoping that someone out there,
Can feel this pain and find meaning in their own,
Perhaps to paint,
Make pottery,
Take a picture,
Or write words just like these;

Moreover, for those that will cast aspersions at me,

Know this,
Fully and without equivocation,
Due to you,

I will move on,
As will you,
I will press on,
As will you,
I will reemerge victorious,
All the while searching,
For a better me,
And you a better you,
Or perhaps you will still live in fear,
However, I will find,
The one I am,
All the while knowing,
That no matter my flaws,

Comedy and tragedy,
(the same be true for you)
That out there somewhere,
Toiling in the Ether,
Is a woman,
Who with nothing more than a smile,
Can free me,
Liberate me,
From this burden,
And maybe,
Just maybe,
I believe deep down,
That she may hold the key,
Mon Cle,
Mon Key,
To finally accepting,
As what I am,
A writer,
A teacher,
A lover,
A husband,
A father,
And a truly dedicated liver of life;

And nothing more.

Or perhaps much, much more!

Merchants of Fear

Merchants of Fear, I fear you and so should YOU…

Closing my eyes,
I still can see,
As clear as day,
As powerful as every breath I take,
As loud as an explosion,
The merchants of hate,
Feeding you,
Lies, deceit and fear,
Though you don’t know it,
Because the merchants,
More sly than Shylock,
Want more than your pound of flesh,
Like leeches,
Suck the very blood from your veins,
As they tighten the reins,
That are wrapped around your neck,
Cleverly disguised as Fendi, Prada, or Gap.

Closing my eyes,
And turning away,
I have not found the button,
That might allow,
Me to drift away from all this,
Escaping the merchants clarion call,
The ever-growing beat,
Drumming up,
Your visceral emotions,
So that you will become,
The robot that you think you are not,
But as long as it comes from Star Magazine
Or Time,
Or countless others,
Like Vogue’s perfume samples,
You are drinking the Kool-Aid,
Of the Merchant.

The Merchant sticks toothpicks in my eyes,
For no matter where I turn,
I am assaulted,
By a message that has remained the same for fifty years or more,
The devil is knocking at your door,
But his face keeps changing,
Communism, Socialism, Vietnamese, Muslim and more,
And never once does the merchant accept,
For even a moment,
That what he is selling is the problem,
And not the other way around,
Clockwork Orange on steroids.

The Merchants of hate and fear,
Come together like a fallen angel,
Dumbfounding you,
Telling you lies,
Wrapped like a Christmas present,
To disguise from you the simple truth,
The game,
Our institutions,
The very things that we hold dear,
Are thinly veiled lies,
That you accept because of McDonalds, Coke or Sony,
Don’t you see just how phony,
It’s like an alcoholic who beats his wife,
Bringing flowers the next day,
Or the father, who gives in to the demands for a pony,
The merchants.

The Merchants soon will develop a new lie,
Dress it up as National Security,
Stir the pot,
Until you are paralyzed,
Shaken to your core,
All the while,
Their profits growing,
They knowing,
That as long as they are selling,
You will buy.

The Merchants are coming,
For the books you read,
The Internet searches you perform,
The bills you pay,
And anything else they can get their hands on,
To keep you in the dark,
While they grow ever more tired,
Of you,
They will destroy you,
If you let them,
And now,
The merchants would like to take a break for this commercial message…
